Newcastle are given huge boost with top PSG star set to MISS their Champions League clash at the Parc des Princes next week after suffering a hamstring injury

  • A top PSG player is likely to miss the Champions League match against Newcastle
  • It comes as a boost for Eddie Howe’s side as they look to make the knockouts
  • It all starts: Jack Grealish has lost his zip… we need him to get it back

Newcastle United have been given a huge boost following the news that a top PSG star will miss next week’s Champions League match in Paris.

The Magpies will be hoping to reach the knockout stages of Europe’s elite competition in their first outing since 2003-04, with Eddie Howe’s men just three points off top spot in Group F.

The Premier League team are technically bottom of the table in what is considered the ‘Group of Death’ after one win (a 4-1 victory against PSG), one draw and two losses.

But Newcastle remain within striking distance for their second match against the Parisiens and they could fancy their chances even more after the news that PSG have suffered a massive injury ahead of the match.

Center back Marquinhos has suffered a hamstring injury, although it is a minor blow and should only rule him out for 10 days.

The Brazilian picked up the problem during international duty with his country after wearing the captain’s armband. He was substituted for teammate Nino at halftime.

After the match, Marquinhos had admitted that it would be difficult for him to play against title rivals Monaco on Friday evening.

“During a game I felt a strain on my hamstring, it was painful, that’s why I came off,” he said.

‘I had the first tests and it was painful when I stretched. I will undergo further tests in Paris.

‘We have to wait. I arrive in Paris on Thursday; it might be a bit tight for Monaco.

‘I don’t know how I’ll feel in a few days. I hope it is not serious and that I can get back on the field as soon as possible.’

And now it seems his chances of facing Newcastle are non-existent.

In an official statement, PSG said: ‘Marquinhos is suffering from a minor injury to his right hamstring and will continue to receive treatment for another ten days.’

His injury comes as PSG try to hold off a title challenge from Nice and Monaco at the top of the table – and Marquinho’s absence comes at a bad time ahead of such a big clash against the latter.
