Luis Enrique warns PSG to prepare for a Newcastle onslaught in Champions League showdown as he praises their ‘intensity’ in Chelsea hammering

Luis Enrique has warned Paris St Germain to prepare for an attack in Newcastle as the sides play each other in Champions League Group F on Tuesday evening.

Enrique put the finishing touches to his plan on Monday morning to take revenge for his side’s 4-1 defeat at St James’ Park in a rain-soaked Poissy in October, after paying close attention to the Magpies’ demolition of Chelsea in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s men were missing 13 senior players on Saturday but still secured a 4-1 win with a performance that impressed the PSG boss.

Enrique said: “If you watched the last game against Chelsea, it was physically unbelievable. Six players apply so much pressure that they can pressure eight players at the same time.

“This intensity in their play and this pressure is something we have to be prepared for.”

The reigning Ligue 1 champions were defeated on Tyneside as goals from Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff and Fabian Schar threw the group wide open.

However, Enrique’s men go into their penultimate match knowing that a win could take them to the knockout stages and while he is understandably wary of Newcastle, that is his focus.

He said: ‘The competition can be very short, it is a very complicated group and the rankings are very close, as you can see.

‘It’s true that now every match is decisive, it’s a knockout style. Depending on the results, two teams could have qualified as early as tomorrow night, so we won’t know until the last day.

“However, I am sure that my team is ready to play, to be competitive on the field and that is what we have proven all season.”

PSG have lost just once in all competitions since their horror show at St James’ – at AC Milan in their last European outing – beating Monaco 5-2 on Friday evening.

However, Portuguese midfielder Vitinha admits there is still a score to settle against the English club.

Vitinha said: ‘We spoke after that match. Of course we knew it wasn’t a great result for us. That was a very tough match and we know that another tough match awaits us tomorrow night, but we still want to win.

‘We may have a small sense of revenge, but that remains within us. Tomorrow will be a show and that we win, that’s the most important thing.

‘We know it is possible to qualify as quickly as tomorrow, but we are trying to focus on this match and this match alone because the only way to qualify is to win, so that’s true we’re trying to concentrate on. .

‘We have to respect what the coach asks of us and do everything we can to win this match and have a good reputation in this group.’
